Madras High Court Data Entry Operator syllabus 2026: written test topics, skill test tasks, marks and qualifying marks.

Marks and time
The selection has three scores.

The written-cum-skill test is 60 minutes. The written test is 25 questions. The skill test is practical. Qualifying marks are 10 out of 25 in the written test, 10 out of 25 in the skill test, and 20 out of 50 in the viva voce. Tentative dates are 10 and 11 October 2026 for the written-cum-skill test, and 24 and 25 October 2026 for the viva voce.
People who qualify are called to the viva voce in the ratio of 1:3 on the combined written-cum-skill marks. Tied candidates are all called. The final order is the sum of the written-cum-skill marks and the viva voce. If those totals tie, the older person is placed higher.
Written syllabus
The 25 questions are drawn from six blocks. The wording below follows the notification.
Windows and Linux. Basic operating-system ideas, types of operating systems, files and folders, user accounts and permissions, installing and updating software, and basic commands on Windows and on Linux.
Networking. LAN, WAN and Wi-Fi, IP address, DNS and DHCP, switches, routers and firewalls, cables, basic network commands, and simple troubleshooting.
Documents and PDF. Creating documents, file types and extensions, Office and Excel basics, creating, converting, merging and splitting PDFs, digital signatures, and file names, order and security.
Video conferencing. Microphones, speakers, cameras and displays, audio and video settings, WebEx, Microsoft Teams and other platforms, and the hardware and software pieces of a video-conference setup.
Hardware. CPU, RAM, hard disk or SSD, motherboard, printers, scanners and other devices, installation, backup, finding a simple fault, and preventive maintenance.
Internet. Browsers and search, websites, URLs and DNS, email and attachments, connectivity and Wi-Fi, cloud services, and safe use: phishing, malware and passwords.

Skill test
The skill test is practical, for 25 marks. You need 10 marks to qualify. The tasks are:
- Scanning a document and converting it with OCR
- Converting a PDF with OCR
- Handling LibreOffice
- Configuring a local network, which it describes as IP configuration
- Hardware troubleshooting and installing drivers
The qualifying mark is 10 out of 25. Both the written test and the skill test have their own qualifying mark, and the viva voce call uses the combined score.
Practise on the machine you have. Scan one page, run OCR, and check whether the text is actually editable. Take two PDFs and merge them, then split one. Open LibreOffice Writer and Calc and do the small jobs a counter clerk does: a short letter, a table, save as PDF. On Windows, open the adapter settings and read the IP address, then do the same idea on Linux with the command the syllabus expects you to know. Install a printer driver and see the printer appear.
Viva voce
The viva voce is out of 50, with a minimum of 20. The notice says its purpose is to judge mental alertness, skills, attitude, ethics, character, and experience of computer skill, computer networks, databases and operating systems.
Nothing in the notice says the viva voce has a fixed number of questions or a fixed number of minutes. Do not treat a made-up interview duration as official. What you can prepare is an explanation, in your own words, of the six written blocks and of a fault you have actually fixed: a printer that would not install, a machine that had no network, a PDF that would not open.
How to prepare
Seven days is a short window if you are also applying before 29 September 2026. Use the time on the published list, in this order.
- Commands and definitions you can be asked in one line: ipconfig, what DNS does, what DHCP does, what a firewall is, RAM against SSD, LAN against WAN.
- File extensions and PDF operations: merge, split, sign, OCR.
- One sitting of LibreOffice and one scan-to-text exercise.
- The question paper, then the explanations.
- One troubleshooting job you have done, for the viva voce.
General knowledge and arithmetic are not in this syllabus.
