Why this exam matters this week

The UPSSSC Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET) 2026 is one of the biggest exams running in Uttar Pradesh right now. Its three exam days fall between 25 October and 1 November 2026, which means most candidates have only days left to prepare. Several sources report about 35.42 lakh registrations, so this is a crowded test with a short revision window.

This post separates what the commission portal confirms from what news and exam sites report, and sets out what to do in the next 10 days.

The schedule changed once. An earlier plan of 23 to 25 October was replaced by the 25 September notice, which moved the dates to 25, 30 October and 1 November. If you saw the older dates on a forum or on social media, ignore them.

Exam shifts and timing

Reports of the revised schedule give two shifts per day:

  • Shift 1: 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon
  • Shift 2: 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Your shift is printed on your admit card, and it may differ from the shift a friend has. Check the slip before you plan travel. Reach your centre at least 60 to 90 minutes early, because the document checks and seating take time when many candidates arrive together.

Exam pattern and marking

Reports describe the following structure. The notice was not read directly, so confirm it on upsssc.gov.in:

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Questions: 100, multiple choice
  • Marks: 100, 1 mark per question
  • Negative marking: 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Unanswered questions score zero.

One source gave a different figure for total marks. Treat the notice as the final word and check the pattern on upsssc.gov.in before you finalise your strategy.

The subject list is also covered differently across coaching sites. The most detailed summary lists sections such as Indian History, the Indian National Movement, Geography, Indian Economy, the Indian Constitution and Public Administration, General Science, Elementary Arithmetic, General Hindi, General English, Logic and Reasoning, and Current Affairs. The full breakdown is on the PET syllabus page.

What to do in the next 10 days

Days 1 to 3: Lock the logistics. Log in with your OTR, check your city, shift and centre. If the admit card is not out yet, check the portal daily. Do not pay anyone for an admit card.

Days 4 to 7: Cover the scoring subjects. Read the General Hindi and General English basics, then do timed reasoning and arithmetic sets. These are the subjects where a fast, accurate score is most likely.

Days 8 to 10: Practise under exam conditions. Take two full 100-question sets in 2 hours. Track every wrong answer. Use the timed PET practice set to test yourself, and review the answers you guessed, not only the ones you got wrong.

How to handle negative marking

With 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong answer, guessing is a risk. A useful rule is to answer when you are at least about 60 to 70 percent sure. Leave the rest, and return only if you have time at the end. Four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer, so accuracy matters more than the number of questions you attempt.

Admit card and the exam day

The admit card for the 25 October exam is live on the commission portal (upsssc.gov.in), checked on 21 October 2026. Download it with your OTR and date of birth. Check:

  1. Your name, photo, signature and exam centre on the admit card.
  2. The shift and date. Mismatches should be reported to the commission before the exam.
  3. The list of items you may carry and the reporting instructions. Read them on the admit card itself, because rules on bags, watches and electronics are set by the commission for each exam.

Carry a printed admit card, a valid photo ID, and one passport-size photograph if the notice asks for it.

What PET means after this

PET is an eligibility screen, not a recruitment exam with a post count. Your PET result decides whether you can take part in later UPSSSC recruitment. Read the notice for how results will be declared, what the qualifying rule is, and how long a PET result stays valid. Do not assume a score of a particular size is enough without checking the notice.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using old dates. The schedule moved once. Only the 25 September notice applies.
  • Relying on third-party admit card links. Use upsssc.gov.in only.
  • Ignoring the shift. Two shifts run each day. A wrong shift can mean a missed exam.
  • Guessing in every question. The 0.25 penalty adds up quickly.
  • Paying an agent. The official process is free from agents and middlemen.

Quick answers for candidates

When should I check the admit card? From the first day it appears on upsssc.gov.in, and again the day before the exam.

Is the PET syllabus the same as the UP police or other recruitment syllabus? No. PET has its own pattern. Use the syllabus page for the subject list and the official notice for the final pattern.

What if I miss my shift? Contact the commission immediately through the official helpline on the portal. Do not assume a re-exam is available.

Sources and verification

This post uses the UPSSSC portal (upsssc.gov.in, checked on 21 October 2026) for the admit card, and news and exam-portal reports for the rest. The PET notification PDF could not be read directly. Registration numbers and the closing date come from third-party sources and may change. The commission's website is the final authority. We will update this page when the admit card and the official result timeline are published.
