Units, seats and eligibility are on the recruitment page. This page covers the selection process in Advt. 01/2026. We read the full six-page advertisement on careers.bhel.in. The test details are thinner than most blogs suggest, so we have kept what the PDF says apart from what you should infer.

The CBE is "in their respective trades". A Fitter sits a Fitter paper, a Welder a Welder paper. That is the strongest hint you have about content.

What it does not print

  • Number of questions or sections. The PDF says only that CBE marks are counted out of 100 when candidates are ranked.
  • Duration.
  • Negative marking. Not mentioned.
  • A topic list. There is no syllabus annexure in the detailed advertisement.

You will see a "120 questions, 90 minutes" pattern on some websites. We could not find it in the advertisement. Until BHEL prints a pattern in a notice or on the call letter, prepare for a trade-heavy objective paper and do not lock your timing to a number nobody official has given.

What to study, trade by trade

Because the paper is set in your trade and the qualification is ITI plus NAC, the natural base is the DGT (NCVT) trade theory and workshop calculation syllabus you studied in ITI. Add the NAC-level shop-floor knowledge from your apprenticeship.

Fitter (278 seats). Measuring tools (vernier, micrometer, height gauge, dial indicator), limits, fits and tolerances, filing, drilling, reaming, tapping, threads, fasteners, assembly, bearings, gears, pipe fitting, hydraulics basics, safety.

Welder (104). Arc and gas welding, SMAW, MIG/MAG, TIG basics, electrodes and coding, joint types and positions, defects and causes, flame types, cutting, inspection, safety. Boiler and pressure vessel units (HPBP Trichy, HPVP Vizag) are where most Welder seats are.

Machinist (101) and Turner (52). Lathe operations, taper turning, thread cutting, milling, indexing, grinding, cutting speed and feed, tool geometry, tool materials, measuring instruments, CNC basics.

Electrician (90). Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, AC fundamentals, power and power factor, transformers, DC and AC machines, starters, wiring and earthing, cables, measuring instruments, protection devices, IE rules basics.

Electronics Mechanic (23). Components, diodes, transistors, rectifiers, amplifiers, digital logic, op-amp basics, measuring instruments, soldering, PCB, power supplies.

Foundryman (12). Patterns and allowances, moulding sand and its testing, cores, melting furnaces, pouring, casting defects, fettling, safety.

For every trade: workshop calculation and science (units, area and volume, mass, heat, simple machines, percentages) and engineering drawing (projections, sections, symbols). Most ITI trade papers lean on these.

The skill test

It is qualifying, so it cannot raise your rank. It can remove you. Expect a practical job in your trade: a fitting job to size for a Fitter, a weld joint for a Welder, a turned or milled job for a Machinist or Turner, a wiring or testing task for an Electrician. BHEL does not describe the jobs in the advertisement, so practise core NAC-level jobs with time pressure.

Document verification happens before the skill test. A missing EWS certificate at that point means you are not allowed to take the skill test at all.

An eight-week plan

Applications close on 18 November and the CBE is pencilled for 11 December. Counting from today, that is about eight weeks.

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: Trade theory, first half of your ITI syllabus. Daily 30 questions.
  2. Weeks 3 and 4: Trade theory, second half. Workshop calculation every day.
  3. Week 5: Engineering drawing and workshop science. Revise measuring instruments.
  4. Week 6: Previous ITI and NAC-level objective papers for your trade. Time yourself.
  5. Week 7: Full-length mixed tests every second day. Review every mistake.
  6. Week 8: Light revision, formulas, safety rules. Check the call letter and any pattern notice on careers.bhel.in.

A 100-question Fitter mock covers trade theory, workshop calculation, drawing and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Advt 01/2026 does not say. It says CBE marks are counted out of 100 for shortlisting. Wait for the call letter or a BHEL notice for the exact pattern.

No. The skill test is qualifying. Final merit is drawn on the CBE score after document verification and the skill test.

Hindi, English, or one of Kannada, Telugu and Tamil, chosen when you apply.
