Your Stage I score is your rank

Stage I is a 100-question computer test in one hour, bilingual, with no negative marking. Pass marks are 40 for UR, EWS and OBC, and 35 for SC and ST.

Everything after that is pass or fail. The physical fitness test, the assessment and adaptability test, document checks and the medical decide only whether you stay in. The final merit list is drawn on Stage I marks alone. If two candidates tie, the older one ranks higher, then the one with more marks in the assessment test.

So every extra mark in Stage I matters more than anything you do on the running track. The detailed Stage I syllabus is shown only on the portal.

Physical test: four events, no break

Men must run 1.6 km in 6 minutes 30 seconds and do 20 squats, 15 push-ups and 15 sit-ups. Women get 8 minutes and do 15, 10 and 10. All four are done in a row, and a break means failing. Stage-wise details are on the pattern page.

Medical rules that end applications

  • Height: 157 cm for men, 152 cm for women. Up to 5 cm less for domiciles of the North East, Garhwal, Kumaon, Sikkim and for Gorkhas. Up to 2 cm less for Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar.
  • Chest (men): 77 cm with at least 5 cm expansion.
  • Vision: Navik GD 6/6 and 6/9, and glasses are not allowed for the GD branch. Navik DB 6/36. Yantrik 6/24. Hygienist 6/60 without glasses, 6/9 and 6/24 with them.
  • Tattoos: only on the inner forearm (elbow to wrist) or the back of the hand. Tribal communities get some concession.
  • Teeth: at least 14 dental points.
  • Biometrics: Mehndi or wax that blocks the thumbprint scan at Stage I means you are not allowed to sit.

Pay and the travel refund

Navik (GD), Navik (DB) and Hygienist-I start at a basic of Rs 21,700 (Level 3). Yantrik starts at Rs 29,200 (Level 5) plus a Yantrik pay of Rs 6,200. DA and duty allowances are extra.

SC and ST candidates who are not Central or State government employees get ordinary second-class train, government bus or steamer fare for Stage II if home is more than 30 km from the centre. You must claim it at Stage II with original tickets, the category certificate and a cancelled cheque. It cannot be claimed later.

Employed candidates need an NOC from their government employer, dated on or after the advertisement. You may not marry or keep family with you during training. Persons with any disability are not eligible, as the Coast Guard is an armed force. Try the timed practice set.
