Quick answer

UPTET is the eligibility test for teachers in Uttar Pradesh. Paper 1 is for classes 1 to 5 and Paper 2 is for classes 6 to 8. Both papers have 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks, a time limit of 150 minutes, and no negative marking, as reported. The official UPESSC notice board lists the UPTET 2026 result notice dated 26 August 2026, so this guide is for candidates preparing for the next cycle or for reference.

Child development and pedagogy

Paper 1 focuses on how children aged roughly six to eleven learn, how inclusion works in a class, and how a teacher plans a lesson. Paper 2 moves towards early adolescence. Reports disagree on the exact age range, so check the notice for the official wording. Study growth stages, learning theories, individual differences, inclusive practice, and assessment.

Language I and Language II

Both sections test comprehension, grammar as it applies to reading and teaching, and the pedagogy of language. Read one passage a day, then answer and explain why each option is right or wrong.

Mathematics (Paper 1) and the optional subject (Paper 2)

For Paper 1, revise the primary maths syllabus: numbers, operations, fractions, measurement, geometry, data handling and how to teach each topic. For Paper 2, the optional subject is worth 60 marks, so it matters most. Choose science and maths, or social science, based on your degree and your strength.

Environmental studies

Cover family, food, shelter, water, plants, animals, health and the environment, at the depth used in primary textbooks.

A twelve-week study plan

  • Weeks 1 to 3: Child development and pedagogy, one unit a week, with a summary for each.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: Language I and Language II, with a passage every day.
  • Weeks 7 to 9: Maths and environmental studies for Paper 1, or the optional subject for Paper 2.
  • Weeks 10 and 11: Full mock tests in the 150-minute format, with an error log.
  • Week 12: Revise the error log. Do not start new topics in the final days.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong paper. Paper 1 is for classes 1 to 5, and Paper 2 for classes 6 to 8.
  • Ignoring the pedagogy section. It carries as many marks as any other section.
  • Using an unofficial syllabus. Use the notice text for the cycle you prepare for.

Choosing between Paper 1 and Paper 2

Pick the paper that matches the classes you teach or want to teach. Paper 1 is for classes 1 to 5, and its maths and environmental studies sections test primary-level content. Paper 2 is for classes 6 to 8, where the optional subject carries 60 of 150 marks. If you hold a degree in a subject taught at middle school, Paper 2 may suit you better. Check the eligibility rules in the notice before you decide.

Teaching-based questions

UPTET questions often describe a classroom and ask for the best action. Practise scenarios: a child who cannot read, a child who is always first to finish, a class with mixed abilities. Choose the answer that helps the learner, not the answer that is easiest for the teacher.

Language sections in practice

For Hindi, practise comprehension, grammar and the teaching of reading. For the second language, prepare the option you chose, and read a passage each day. Revise the grammar that appears in the passages, such as tense, voice and connectors, and the way the passage builds its argument.

Optional subject strategy (Paper 2)

Revise the optional subject using the middle-school textbook. Note the key concepts and the common errors students make. Solve previous questions in the same format, and check each explanation. The 60-question block is the largest in the paper, so it deserves the most revision time.

Mock test routine

Use a full-length mock in the 150-minute format once a week in the last six weeks. After each mock, record your errors by section and by cause. Revise the sections with the most errors first.

Child development: a study method

Break the topic into five parts: growth stages, learning theories, individual differences, inclusive practice and assessment. For each part, write a one-page summary in your own words, with one classroom example. Revise the summaries each week, and test yourself by explaining each part aloud without notes.

Environmental studies for Paper 1

Environmental studies at primary level covers family, food, shelter, water, plants and animals, health and the environment. Read the primary textbooks used in the state, and for each chapter note three facts a child should learn and one way to teach each fact. Questions often ask how to teach a topic, not only what it is.

Mathematics for Paper 1

Revise the primary maths topics: numbers and operations, fractions, measurement, shapes, and data. For each topic, find one common mistake a child makes and the teaching step that fixes it. Practise word problems, because they test understanding as well as calculation.

Mock tests and review

Take a full timed mock every week in the final eight weeks. After each mock, record every wrong answer by section and by cause: a missed concept, a misread question or a time loss. Spend the next day's revision on the largest group of errors.
