UP Police Constable Syllabus 2026: Written Exam Topics, Pattern and Preparation
The UP Police constable written test is an objective, OMR-based exam with four sections: general knowledge, general Hindi, numerical and mental ability, and reasoning.
Quick answer
The UP Police constable written test is an objective, OMR-based exam with four sections: general knowledge, general Hindi, numerical and mental ability, and reasoning. Reports describe 150 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes, with roughly 37 to 38 questions in each section. Reports disagree on the marks and on negative marking, so do not plan your attempts until you read the notice for your cycle.
Pattern as reported
| Section | Questions (approx.) | Topics |
|---|---|---|
| General knowledge | 37 to 38 | Current affairs, history, geography, polity, economy, science and Uttar Pradesh |
| General Hindi | 37 to 38 | Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension |
| Numerical and mental ability | 37 to 38 | Arithmetic, percentages, ratios, data |
| Reasoning | 37 to 38 | Series, analogies, coding, puzzles |
Reports give the total as 150 questions, with marks described as 300 in some sources and 150 in others. Confirm the total marks in the notice.
The negative marking question
Reports say three different things:
- A deduction of 0.5 marks for each wrong answer.
- No negative marking, with 2 marks per correct answer.
- A deduction of 0.25 marks, from an older cycle.
Because the answer changes how you should guess, check the notice before the exam. If the notice says there is a penalty, guess only when you can eliminate at least two options.
General knowledge
Cover Indian and world history at school level, the geography of India and Uttar Pradesh, the Indian constitution and polity, basic economics, science in daily life, and current affairs from the last year. Read one newspaper summary a day and make a monthly list of important events.
General Hindi
Revise grammar: sandhi, samas, synonyms and antonyms, idioms, and the correct use of words. Read one passage a day and answer the questions. Practise error spotting, because it is a common question type.
Numerical and mental ability
Cover the basics: number system, percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, time and work, speed and distance, averages, simple interest, and data interpretation from tables. Practise timed sets, and learn the quick methods for percentages and ratios.
Reasoning
Practise series, analogies, classification, coding and decoding, blood relations, direction sense, puzzles and figure-based questions. Build a short method for each type, and solve sets against the clock.
A ten-week plan
- Weeks 1 and 2: Reasoning and numerical ability, with 30 questions a day.
- Weeks 3 and 4: General Hindi grammar and comprehension, plus daily vocabulary.
- Weeks 5 to 7: General knowledge and current affairs, with weekly revision of static topics.
- Weeks 8 and 9: Full mock tests in the 120-minute format, with an error log.
- Week 10: Revise the error log and the weak topics.
Physical and document rules (after the written test)
The written test is followed by a physical test, document checks and a medical test in the usual cycle. Read the physical standards in the notice and build your training early, since running and other events take months to improve.
Common mistakes
- Guessing without knowing the penalty. Confirm the marking rule first.
- Practising only general knowledge. Reasoning and maths decide many ranks.
- Using an old cycle's pattern. The pattern can change between cycles.
How to prepare a daily routine
Build a routine you can keep for ten weeks. A sample day: two hours of focused study in the morning on reasoning or maths, one hour of Hindi grammar and comprehension, one hour of general knowledge and current affairs, and a short review of the day's mistakes. Keep the evenings for light revision and physical training.
Hindi section tips
Learn the common grammar rules that appear in exams: sandhi, samas, and the use of words in context. Make a list of confusing word pairs and check them each week. Read short passages from a daily Hindi newspaper, and answer two questions from each. This builds comprehension faster than rote grammar alone.
Reasoning section tips
Practise the most common types: series, analogy, classification, coding and decoding, and direction sense. For each type, learn a quick method, then solve at least ten questions. Time each set, and review every wrong answer until you understand the method behind it.
General knowledge and current affairs
Cover Indian history from the freedom struggle onward, the basics of the Constitution, the geography of India and Uttar Pradesh, and recent government schemes. Keep a notebook of current affairs with dates and names. Revise it every Sunday.
Physical and medical preparation
Physical standards in constable recruitment are strict, and a small measurement error can cost a candidate their place. Build a running routine across several months, with timings recorded each week. Check the medical rules in the notice, and keep your health records and any vaccination records in one folder.
Marks strategy with an unclear penalty
Because reports disagree on negative marking, plan for the stricter case until you read the notice. Attempt a question only when you can eliminate at least two options or when you are sure. Track your accuracy in each mock. If your accuracy falls below about 70 per cent in a section, slow down and attempt fewer questions there.
General knowledge: a focused list
Make a list of the topics the syllabus names: Indian history and the freedom movement, the Constitution, geography of India and Uttar Pradesh, economy basics, science in everyday life, and current affairs. For each, write five facts you must know. Revise the list every week, and test yourself with five questions a day.
Numerical and mental ability: quick routines
Learn the shortcuts for percentages, ratios, averages and simple interest. Practise speed in calculation: squares and cubes, multiplication tables up to 20, and fractions to decimals. Solve a timed set of 20 questions each day, and check every wrong answer.
Reasoning: consistent practice
Reasoning rewards routine. Solve a set of series, analogies or coding questions each day, and write the rule for each one you got wrong. Puzzles and figure-based questions improve with a fixed method. Do one timed set of puzzles every three days.
Two-month calendar
- Month 1, weeks 1 to 4: Reasoning and numerical ability daily, with general knowledge in short bursts.
- Month 2, weeks 5 to 8: General knowledge and Hindi, plus full mocks each week.
- Final week: Revise the error log, and do one full mock on the last weekend.
