Answer key and explanations

  1. (b) Rs 420. Amount after 2 years = 2000 × 1.1 × 1.1 = Rs 2,420. Interest = Rs 420.
  2. (c) 60. 3x + 5x = 96, so 8x = 96 and x = 12. The larger number is 5 × 12 = 60.
  3. (b) 3 hours. Time = distance ÷ speed = 15 ÷ 5 = 3 hours.
  4. (b) 25%. Profit = 500 − 400 = 100. Profit % = 100 ÷ 400 × 100 = 25%.
  5. (b) 42. The differences are 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, so the next term is 30 + 12 = 42.
  6. (b) 6 days. Combined rate = 1/10 + 1/15 = 5/30 = 1/6. Time = 6 days.
  7. (b) 17. Sum of the four numbers = 4 × 15 = 60. New sum = 85. New average = 85 ÷ 5 = 17.
  8. (c) Cannot be determined. The second statement says some flowers are red, which does not tell us whether any rose is among those red flowers.
  9. (a) 20. Let the numbers be x and y. x + y = 50 and x − y = 10, so x = 30 and y = 20. The smaller number is 20.
  10. (b) Repo rate. The repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends to banks against government securities.
