The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has declared the CA Foundation result for the September 2026 exam on 6 November 2026. The announcement on icai.org links to the result portal at caresults.icai.org. ICAI had said on 1 November that the result was likely by the evening of 6 November.

This page explains how to check your result, the exact pass rules, and what to do next whether you passed or not.

What was announced

ICAI's announcements page lists:

  • 1 November 2026: Results of the CA Foundation Examination held in September 2026 likely to be declared by the evening of 6 November 2026.
  • 6 November 2026: Results of the CA Foundation Examination held in September 2026 declared.
  • 23 September 2026: Schedule of the Intermediate and Foundation Examinations, January 2027.

The Foundation exam has four papers of 100 marks each: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics.

How to check the result

  1. Open caresults.icai.org.
  2. Choose Foundation - September 2026.
  3. Enter your registration number (the number ICAI gave you when you joined the Foundation course).
  4. Enter your roll number from the admit card.
  5. Complete the captcha and submit.
  6. Your paper-wise marks, aggregate and result status will appear. Take a screenshot and a printout.

The result portal gets heavy traffic on the first evening. If it does not load, try early morning or late at night.

Keep your registration number safe. You need it for Intermediate registration, certified copies and every later ICAI service.

What marks do you need to pass?

Under the Chartered Accountants Regulations, you pass Foundation when you score, in one sitting:

  • at least 40 out of 100 in each paper, and
  • at least 200 out of 400 in aggregate (50 percent).

Both conditions must hold. There is no exemption for a paper at Foundation level, unlike Intermediate and Final. If you miss either condition, you write all four papers again.

Papers 3 and 4 (Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics) are objective, with negative marking of one-quarter mark for each wrong answer. Papers 1 and 2 are descriptive.

Worked examples

CandidateAccountsLawQuantEconomicsTotalResult
A62485541206Pass
B75703860243Fail (Quant below 40)
C45445250191Fail (aggregate below 200)
D78657266281Pass

Candidate B shows the most common trap: a strong total cannot cover one weak paper. Candidate C shows the other: passing every paper is not enough without the 200 total.

If you passed

Register for CA Intermediate. Log in to the ICAI self-service portal (eservices.icai.org) and register for the Intermediate course. Your Foundation marksheet is the basis of your eligibility.

Plan your timeline. Under the current CA scheme, you can take the Intermediate exam after a fixed study period from registration. You must also plan your practical training (articleship), which starts after you clear one or both groups of Intermediate. Check the current rules on icai.org before you choose an exam session.

Complete the ICITSS course. The Information Technology and Soft Skills course (ICITSS) is required before articleship. Many students finish it while they prepare for Intermediate.

Download your marksheet. ICAI sends the marksheet by post or email in the weeks after the result. Use the online statement until then.

If you did not pass

Look at your paper-wise marks before you decide anything.

  • Close miss (190 to 199 total, or one paper at 35 to 39): your preparation was nearly there. Re-attempting in January 2027 is realistic with focused revision of the weak paper.
  • Large gap (below 170, or two or more papers below 40): consider a full restart with a fixed timetable and at least three full mock exams before the next sitting.

Verification of marks. ICAI allows you to apply for verification of marks within a fixed window after the result. Verification checks totalling and unmarked answers. It is not a re-evaluation. Watch the announcements page for the window and fee.

Certified copies. You can also apply for certified copies of your answer books. They show where you lost marks in the descriptive papers.

Why students usually miss the pass mark

  • One weak paper. Most failures come from a single paper below 40, often Quantitative Aptitude or Business Laws, while the total is above 200.
  • Too little writing practice. Students read Accounts and Law but do not write full answers under time. In the exam they run out of time on the descriptive papers.
  • Guessing in objective papers. With one-quarter negative marking, wild guesses in Papers 3 and 4 can wipe out 8 to 10 marks.
  • No full mocks. Students who skip full-length tests under exam conditions often discover their time problem only on exam day.

Fix the one problem that cost you the most marks first. Do not restart every subject from page one.

January 2027 Foundation exam

ICAI has already published the schedule for the Foundation and Intermediate exams of January 2027 (announcement dated 23 September 2026). If you plan to re-attempt, check the application window and late-fee date on icai.org at once. The window for the January session is short and opens soon after the September result.

For a re-attempt, focus on:

  1. Accounting: practise full questions, not only reading. Most marks are lost on format and adjustments.
  2. Business Laws: answer in a structure: provision, facts, conclusion. Quote the section where you can.
  3. Quantitative Aptitude: statistics carries a large share. Use mock tests to control negative marking.
  4. Business Economics: cover the whole syllabus. Questions are spread across chapters.

How the pass rate has moved

ICAI press releases for recent Foundation sessions have shown overall pass rates between roughly 14 and 30 percent. The rate moves a lot from one session to the next. A single bad attempt is common and is not a sign you cannot complete the course. Use your marks to decide where to put your time next.
