Age limits depend on your community, not just the post

For the Others category, you must be under 30 on 1 July 2026 for almost every post. Village Administrative Officer starts at 21, and Executive Officer Grade IV runs from 25 to 35.

Reserved communities go further. BC(OBCM), BCM and MBC/DC candidates must be under 32, and SC, SC(A) and ST candidates under 35. The detail most people miss is the footnote: if you hold any qualification above the minimum (for example HSC or a degree when the post asks for SSLC), there is no upper age limit for these communities. This does not apply to Village Administrative Officer (under 40), Forest Guard or Forest Watcher, which keep their printed limits. "No limit" still means you must not have completed 60.

Persons with benchmark disability in the Others category must be under 40, and ex-servicemen under 48. Forest Guard and Forest Watcher are not open to persons with benchmark disability.

Restrictions printed in the notice

  • Five years of service bars Others. A candidate outside the reserved communities who has five or more years in any Central or State government service cannot apply, even within the age limit.
  • Religion-specific posts. Executive Officer Grade IV (code 1655) in Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments is only for Hindus. Typist 3846 and Steno Typist 3847 in the Waqf Board are only for persons professing Islam.
  • Judicial and Legal Services posts are not open to candidates who are blind or have low vision.
  • Posting outside Tamil Nadu. Sales Assistant (3806) can be posted in New Delhi or Kolkata. Junior Assistant 3788 in the Handloom Weavers' Co-operative can be posted anywhere in India.

One paper, and why the Tamil part decides everything

The exam is a single OMR paper of 200 questions for 300 marks in 3 hours: 100 Tamil questions in Part A, 75 General Studies in Part B and 25 Aptitude in Part C. You must score 60 of 150 in Part A, or Parts B and C are not evaluated, and Part A marks also count towards rank. Differently abled candidates who studied only English can take General English in place of Part A.

Unit-wise question counts and the full pattern are on the syllabus page.

A blank bubble costs marks, a wrong answer does not

Each OMR question has a fifth option, E, for "answer not known". The notice says no bubble may be left blank. If you leave one blank, 0.5 mark is cut from your total. A wrong answer costs nothing. So never leave a bubble empty: shade E, or better, guess.

Other deductions on the OMR sheet: 2 marks for writing the register number wrongly on a non-personalised sheet, and 0.5 mark for a missing left thumb impression. A pencil, or any pen other than black ball-point, gets the sheet invalidated.

Typing grade order for Typist and Steno posts

For Typist 2200 and the judicial typist posts, candidates with Higher grade in both Tamil and English are selected first. Only if there are not enough of them do candidates with Higher Tamil and Lower English get picked, then Higher English and Lower Tamil. Municipal, Waqf and Greater Chennai typist posts take only Higher grade in both. If you hold the lower combination, list these posts with that in mind.
