Who can apply: the degree list is wider than most people think
A Food Safety Officer is usually thought of as a food-technology post. This advertisement follows the FSS Rules, 2011, and accepts a much wider list. Food technology, dairy technology, biotechnology and oil technology graduates qualify. So do graduates in agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, veterinary science, biochemistry, microbiology and chemistry. Medical graduates also qualify: MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS and BSRMS. A bachelor's degree is enough. A master's or a doctorate in the same fields also counts.
Mention every qualification and all relevant experience in the form, not only the minimum. If applications are many, HPSC can shortlist on the percentage in the essential degree, on a higher degree, or on experience, and it can only use what you entered.
Two conditions that are easy to miss
Hindi or Sanskrit. You must have studied Hindi or Sanskrit up to matriculation, or Hindi in higher education. Candidates from states where Hindi is not a school subject should check this before paying.
No financial interest in food. Under the FSS Rules, a person with a financial interest in making, importing or selling food cannot be appointed. If your family runs a food business that is registered in your name, or you are a partner in one, resolve this before appointment.
Pay and age
The pay is Pay Band Rs 9,300 to 34,800 with Grade Pay Rs 4,200. In the Haryana pay matrix this is FPL-6, Cell 1, Rs 35,400, plus allowances.
The age limit is 18 to 42 on 19 October 2026. SC, BC and PwBD candidates of Haryana get 5 years. Ex-servicemen get their service plus 3 years. People who have worked on an ad hoc, contract, work-charged or daily-wage basis in Haryana government bodies get relaxation equal to their completed years on an equivalent post, up to age 52. Only the matriculation certificate is accepted as proof of date of birth.
Selection
The advertisement says HPSC generally uses three stages: a screening test, a subject knowledge test, and an interview. It can also skip the screening test and go straight to the subject knowledge test and interview. The screening test, if held, uses OMR sheets that are checked only by machine. A wrongly filled name, roll number or booklet series circle gets the sheet rejected, and no re-checking is allowed.

Educational Qualification
- A bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in food technology or a food-technology discipline such as food engineering, food processing, food biotechnology, or food safety and quality management. Or dairy technology, biotechnology or oil technology.
- Or a degree in agricultural science (agriculture, agricultural engineering, dairy technology, fisheries, food technology, food nutrition and dietetics, horticulture), veterinary sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, or medicine. MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS and BSRMS are named.
- Hindi or Sanskrit up to matriculation, or Hindi as a subject in higher education.
- You must not have any financial interest in the manufacture, import or sale of food. This bar comes from the Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011.
- The Food Safety and Standards Authority's training is given after appointment. You do not need it to apply.
