Best Colleges for AI Engineering in India: Start With NIRF 2025 and Check the Programme
NIRF does not rank colleges by AI programme. This guide uses the official NIRF 2025 engineering table as the base, then shows how to check AI, ML and data science programmes on each campus before you choose.
The limit of a ranking
If you search for "best college for AI engineering", you will find many lists. Most of them are not based on an official source. The NIRF engineering ranking, published by the Ministry of Education, ranks institutions overall, not by programme. No official NIRF table ranks colleges for AI engineering.
So the right way to start is:
- Use the NIRF 2025 engineering table as a base for institution quality.
- Check each institution's AI, machine learning or data science programme on its own website.
- Compare the seats, cutoffs, faculty and labs for that programme.
Starting list from NIRF 2025
These are the top institutions in the NIRF 2025 engineering table, with their overall rank and score:
| Rank | Institution | City | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | IIT Madras | Chennai | 88.72 |
| 2 | IIT Delhi | New Delhi | 85.74 |
| 3 | IIT Bombay | Mumbai | 83.65 |
| 4 | IIT Kanpur | Kanpur | 81.82 |
| 5 | IIT Kharagpur | Kharagpur | 78.69 |
| 6 | IIT Roorkee | Roorkee | 75.44 |
| 7 | IIT Hyderabad | Hyderabad | 72.31 |
| 8 | IIT Guwahati | Guwahati | 72.24 |
| 9 | NIT Tiruchirappalli | Tiruchirappalli | 68.14 |
| 10 | IIT (BHU) Varanasi | Varanasi | 67.24 |
This is a starting list only. A high overall rank does not guarantee a strong AI programme, and a lower-ranked institution may have one.
How to check an AI programme
For each college on your list, check the following on its official site:
- Programme name. Is there a B.Tech in AI, AI and data science, or a similar programme? Some institutions offer AI as a specialisation within computer science. Read the curriculum.
- Seats and intake. How many seats does the AI or data science programme have? Compare with computer science.
- Admission route and cutoffs. For IITs and NITs, use the JoSAA closing ranks for the programme. For private universities, check their admission test and the previous year's cutoff.
- Faculty and labs. Look at the department page. Check how many faculty members work on AI, ML or data science, and which labs they run.
- Electives and projects. Check the course list for machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing and data engineering. Check whether there is a capstone project or an industry project.
- Placement report. Read the branch-wise median for AI and data programmes if the institution publishes it. Do not rely only on the highest package.
Common mistakes
- Choosing by the brand name alone. A famous institution may have a small AI intake. Check the programme.
- Ignoring the computer science base. Strong AI work needs strong maths and programming. Check the first two years.
- Trusting unofficial lists. Use the NIRF table and the official site of each institution.
A simple way to shortlist
- Pick three institutions from the NIRF top 20 that you can get into.
- For each one, write down the AI programme name, the seats, the last closing rank, and the labs.
- Compare the three on fees, hostel and location.
- Read the placement report and the curriculum before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
