How to Become an AI Researcher in India (2026): GATE DA, Labs, Internships
An AI researcher in India designs experiments and publishes or patents new methods. A PhD is the default for Research Scientist. A strong B.Tech or M.Tech with a reproducible repo can reach Research Engineer. Start with GATE DA or CS, one finished project, and lab internships, not a stack of certificates.

An AI researcher in India is someone whose job is to pose a question about models or data, run a controlled experiment, and write the result as a paper, patent or internal report. If you want that path in 2026, the honest sequence is: math and Python, one finished experiment, GATE DA or GATE CS or a lab internship, then either M.Tech or a Research Fellow year, then a PhD if you want the Scientist title.
This guide is for Indian B.Tech, B.E., B.Sc, M.Tech and MCA students. It is not a promise of a DeepMind offer. It is a map of titles, exams, labs and internships you can actually apply to.

Direct answer
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Core work | Hypotheses, experiments, papers or patents |
| Default degree for Scientist | PhD |
| Realistic first paid research job | Research Engineer or Applied Scientist after B.Tech or M.Tech, or Research Fellow after graduation |
| Exam that maps to the syllabus | GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) and/or GATE CS |
| Time from 12th to first research salary | About 4 to 6 years for Engineer or Fellow; 8 to 12 years for academic faculty |
| What beats certificates | A cloneable repo plus a professor or engineer who will take a reference call |
Pick one row as your target. Putting "AI researcher, FDE and founder" on the same resume reads as unfocused.
What the job is
A research week is closer to a lab notebook than to a hackathon.
Reading: arXiv, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL or CVPR (pick the venue that matches your lane), and internal experiment logs.
Experiment design: a dataset, a published baseline, an ablation, and a metric you can defend.
Implementation: PyTorch is the default in most Indian labs in 2026. JAX shows up in some theory and Google-adjacent groups. Notebook-only tutorials are not enough. You version data, log seeds, and write down failures.
Writing: a paper, a patent disclosure, or a five-slide deck for people who will never read the methods.
Titles that get mixed up:
- Research Scientist: original methods; PhD is the usual bar.
- Research Engineer: strong coding; you make experiments run at scale.
- Applied Scientist: product metrics (ranking, ads, speech) with a research flavour.
- ML Engineer on a research team: you ship the research, you may not set the research agenda.
Always read the "you will" bullets on the posting.
Hiring data, not hype
Employers still say they want AI specialists. That is not the same as campus seats labelled "researcher".
The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025 ranks AI and Machine Learning Specialists among the fastest-growing global roles through 2030. For India it names Big Data Specialists, AI and Machine Learning Specialists, and Security Management Specialists as projected fast growers. Press coverage of the India chapter reported 96 percent of surveyed organisations implementing AI programmes against 88 percent globally. That is strategy, not an intake census.
Organisations running AI programmes, India vs global
Share of surveyed employers implementing AI programmes
PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer (Lightcast data, more than one billion postings across 27 countries) found AI-specialist postings up 68.9 percent in 2025 against 8.6 percent for jobs overall, and an average 62 percent wage premium for similar roles that list AI skills versus those that do not. PwC is global, not an India CTC table.
Nasscom's Strategic Review 2026 projects Indian tech employment at about 6 million in FY26, a 2.3 percent rise and about 135,000 net adds. CXOs told Nasscom that AI-native roles will expand faster than the overall digital workforce, and that fresher hiring is shifting from headcount to AI fluency, problem-solving and learnability. Nasscom and Deloitte's 2025 compensation survey found AI/ML roles attract the highest pay premiums, ahead of cybersecurity and cloud.
LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise 2026 (United States titles) ranked AI Engineer first, with a median 3.7 years of prior experience for people already in the role. Treat that as a warning: the exploding titles are not typical sixth-semester campus jobs.
Research hiring is a thin slice of all of the above. It pays attention to evidence: GitHub, papers, and references.
Who can apply
| Background | Realistic first research step | Extra work |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.E. CS or IT | Lab intern, GATE CS or DA, Research Engineer | One paper-style project |
| ECE / EE | Speech, signal, edge ML, VLSI-adjacent groups | Extra algorithms and Python |
| Mathematics / Statistics / B.Sc | Theory, probabilistic ML, evaluation | Software hygiene and PyTorch |
| MCA / M.Sc CS | M.Tech or Research Fellow after a thesis-quality project | Same as CS, plus algorithms drills |
| Non-STEM | Rare for core research | Build a technical minor or a second degree; product or policy roles may fit better |
English writing matters because papers and reviews are in English. Hindi helps in some PSU and teaching interviews. It does not replace a methods section.
Labs and entry routes
Industry labs in India: Microsoft Research India (Bengaluru), Adobe Research, IBM Research India, Google (limited research seats), Qualcomm, Samsung R&D, Intel, and AI centres of excellence inside large IT firms. Quality varies. Ask what they published or open-sourced in the last twelve months.
Academic labs: IISc, IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad, ISI Kolkata, CMI. Summer internships here are the usual on-ramp if you do not have a family network in tech.
Microsoft Research India Research Fellows: official programme page. For people who have finished BS/BE/BTech or MS/ME/MTech in CS or related areas. PhD students are not eligible. Non-CS backgrounds are allowed. The 2026 cycle: applications 7 January to 15 February, joining July 2026. Watch the same page each winter for the next cycle.
Explore Microsoft (India): careers.microsoft.com Explore programme. 8 weeks in India for first- or second-year undergraduates in technical majors. This is product software, not MSR research. Use it for engineering muscle, then apply to labs later.
Do not confuse MSR's Undergraduate Research Internship in Computing with an India seat. That listing is North America.
Government and mission work: MeitY's Digital India Internship Scheme (the 2026 window ran April to July; watch intern.meity.gov.in for the next cycle). IndiaAI under Digital India Corporation posts contract roles on MeitY. C-DAC, DRDO labs and ISRO centres hire project staff and some research-adjacent engineers through public advertisements on this site's jobs board when we verify a notice.
Startups: the word "research" is used loosely. Ask for publications, open-source, or a named advisor. A fine-tune of an open model is product work, which can still be a good first job.
Abroad PhD: US and EU labs still filter on publications, GRE (where required), and advisors who know your referee. An IIT or IISc M.Tech thesis is a common India-to-abroad path. Visa timelines are part of the plan, not an afterthought.
Pay and stipends
There is no official Government of India CTC table for "AI researcher". Do not trust a blog that prints one number for the whole country.
What you can cite:
- Nasscom and Deloitte (2025): AI/ML is the highest skill premium in Indian tech compensation, ahead of cybersecurity and cloud. That is a premium on similar roles, not a fresher CTC.
- PwC (2026, global): 62 percent average wage premium for postings that require AI skills versus comparable postings that do not. PwC does not control for education, experience or city.
- Academic PhD and many project-staff roles pay a monthly stipend set by the funding agency (DST, MeitY, institute norms). That is not a product-company CTC.
- Research Fellow and Research Engineer offers at product labs sit above typical IT-services campus packages, but the sample is small. Negotiate on the offer letter. Ignore unsourced "8 to 25 LPA" ranges.
If a recruiter will not put pay in writing, treat the conversation as incomplete.
Skills that actually get you in
Mathematics: linear algebra, probability, optimisation, calculus at the level where a paper's derivation does not freeze you. You do not need to memorise every proof.
Programming: Python, Git, Linux. C++ helps in systems groups.
ML core: supervised and unsupervised learning, generalisation, regularisation, metrics, and why train, validation and test splits exist.
Deep learning: transformers are default in 2026. Still learn a classical baseline so you know when a large model is unnecessary. Pick a lane by year 3: NLP, vision, speech, RL or ML systems.
Hygiene: cite datasets, report negative results, write a README a stranger can run.
Communication: explain a result in five minutes without slides.
Year-by-year roadmap
Assumes a four-year B.Tech. Compress if you are already in M.Tech.
Year 1
Finish calculus, linear algebra and introductory programming. Take one structured intro: IIT Madras BS Data Science if you want an India-priced degree path, or Andrew Ng's Machine Learning Specialization if you want Coursera pacing. NPTEL machine learning courses are separate from the IIT Madras online degree; pick one and finish it. Build one small project (tabular data or MNIST) with a Markdown report.
Year 2
Learn PyTorch from the official tutorials or fast.ai. Reproduce a published baseline. Apply to Explore Microsoft if you are first or second year. Email one professor with a one-page proposal, not a 20-page CV. Ignore Kaggle and Hugging Face until you will finish the work.
Year 3
Pick a lane. Watch Stanford CS229 if your college does not offer a graduate ML course. Produce one credible output: workshop paper, arXiv preprint with code, or a technical blog with a cloneable repo. Industry research internships at Adobe, Qualcomm and similar firms often close six to nine months before summer. Set a reminder in October.
Register for GATE in the window the organising IIT announces (for 2026 that was IIT Guwahati at gate2026.iitg.ac.in). Download the DA syllabus PDF: probability and statistics, linear algebra, calculus and optimisation, programming and DSA, databases, machine learning, AI.
Year 4
PhD path: GATE or institute tests, three recommendation letters, a research statement built from your year-3 project.
Industry path: coding plus ML theory plus a whiteboard of one project (problem, data, baseline, your change, metric, next step). Practise LeetCode medium problems and explaining trade-offs aloud.
Apply to Research Fellows in January if you will have your degree by joining date.
After graduation
An IIT, IIIT or ISI M.Tech with a real thesis is the standard India route into applied research without an immediate abroad PhD. Treat the thesis like a product: code, document, advisor who answers the phone.

- One sentence on who you are (year, college, city).
- One sentence on their latest paper, with a specific question.
- Link to one repo.
- A proposed eight-week project with a measurable output.
- Your available dates.
Do not attach a 15-page PDF. Do not mass-mail 40 professors with the same first line.
Portfolio rules
Do: README, command, metric range, dataset citation, a "what failed" note.
Do not: claim a novel architecture after a hyperparameter tweak; paste an LLM report you cannot defend.
Interview loop
Expect some mix of:
- Coding (arrays, graphs, Python)
- ML fundamentals (bias-variance, regularisation, attention)
- A walk-through of your project, including negative results
- For Scientist roles: a paper discussion
Bring a single "story project". If you cannot explain the baseline, you are not ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
For Research Scientist at Microsoft Research, Google, Adobe Research and similar labs, a PhD is still the usual filter. Research Engineer and Applied Scientist roles hire M.Tech graduates, and sometimes B.Tech graduates, if they have a paper, a workshop poster, or a public repo that reproduces a baseline. Read the title: Scientist usually means original research; Engineer usually means you run experiments that ship.
Yes, if you can show math, code and one finished experiment. College rank helps for campus shortlists. Lab emails, GATE DA or CS, and Microsoft Research India's Research Fellows programme (open to related degrees, not only IIT CS) are the usual off-campus routes. Certificates alone do not substitute a repo a professor can clone.
Yes. ECE students often enter speech, signal and VLSI-adjacent ML. Maths and statistics students are competitive for theory, probabilistic ML and evaluation. You still need Python, Git and one deep-learning stack (PyTorch is the default in 2026). Microsoft Research India states Research Fellows can come from electronics, linguistics, economics and other fields, not only Computer Science.
Write GATE Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (paper code DA) if you want M.Tech seats that list DA explicitly and you prefer probability, ML and AI over operating systems and compilers. Write GATE Computer Science (CS) if you want the widest set of CSE M.Tech seats and systems-heavy labs. Many students sit both in the years IIT allows dual papers. Check the current GATE brochure on gate2026.iitg.ac.in (or the next organising IIT) before you pay.
No. An AI or ML engineer is paid to make a model fast, cheap and reliable in a product. A researcher is paid to ask a new question, design a fair experiment, and write it up. Some industry labs mix both. If your week is tickets and latency, you are engineering.
Bengaluru has the densest mix of industry labs and startups. Hyderabad and Pune have large R&D centres. Delhi NCR has policy, defence-adjacent and some product labs. Academic hiring follows IISc, the IITs, IIIT Hyderabad, ISI, CMI and a smaller set of central universities. Remote research jobs exist but are rare for first roles.
There is no official cut-off. Competitive lab internships often see applicants above 8.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale in a relevant branch, but a lower CGPA plus a public reproduction of a paper and a faculty email can still win. Professors care whether you can read a methods section and rerun a baseline.
If you have already graduated (B.Tech or M.Tech), apply to the Research Fellows programme when it opens, usually in January for a mid-year start. The 2026 cycle opened on 7 January and closed on 15 February, with joining in July. Current first- and second-year undergraduates in India can apply to Explore Microsoft (8 weeks, product engineering, not a research lab). MSR's undergraduate research internship in computing is listed as North America, not India.
One repository with a README, a requirements file, the training command, the dataset licence, a reported metric with a seed, and a short note on what failed. Ten empty forks hurt you. Do not upload a report you cannot defend without ChatGPT open.
